Here is how to update your Joomla 2.5.x demo to Joomla 3.x STS. Please backup your installation before the update. You will not be able to revert back to Joomla 2.5! Joomla forum and developers says its a quite easy job to upgrade Joomla 2.5.x to Joomla 3.x version but its hard to an upgrade from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 3.x (Its more complicated). But based on the site behavior it may easy or complex.

1. Back-up your website

2. Check to make sure all your running extensions are the latest version

In your Joomla back-end, check the 'Extension Manager' to make sure that you are running the latest version of each extension.

3. Make sure you are running the latest version of Joomla 2.5

4. Check your system to make sure that it meets Joomla 3 requirements

In your Joomla back-end, Go to 'Site' -> 'System Information', check all your settings and make sure that they meet all the requirements here: http://www.joomla.org/technical-requirements.html.

You need to check all the templates and extensions that you want to use on your website to make sure that they are now compatible with Joomla 3.x. Some Joomla extensions do not support Joomla 3.x

6. Create a test site

In Joomla test site back-end, go to Components -> Joomla! Update

Click the 'Options' button -> Choose 'Short Term Support' in the 'Update server' parameter, then Save & Close.

Click 'Install the update' and you have finished the upgrade process.

8. Apply the upgrade in the live site

After you successfully upgrade Joomla on your test site, you do the same process in your live site.

Below is an example of how to purge articles from the Article Viewer, but the same logic applies to categories, modules, banners, contacts etc.

Overview of how to Find and Purge your Trashed items:

Go to your Article Manager
Change the Status in your Article Manager
Select Articles to Purge in the Trash Manager

1. Go to your Article Manager

Article Manager is where all your articles are stored. You can use the Article Manager options to choose how you want your Articles to display on your website.

Login to your Joomla 2.5 Administrator
Click on ‘Content’, ‘Article Manager’

2. Change the Status in your Article Manager

You already deleted a number of articles and now you want to view them in your Trash Manager. All you have to do is change the status to ‘Trashed’. Simple right?

Click on the ‘ Select Status’ and changed to ‘Trashed‘

3. Select Articles to Purge in the Trash Manager

Use the checkbox to select the articles you want to purge from your site
Click on the ‘Empty Trash‘ button on the top right
You will see a confirmation message saying:

Import Joomla 2.5 Database To 3.0

2 articles deleted.

That’s it. The same logic applies to find the Trash Manager for your categories, Modules, Contacts and other elements you have on your Joomla 2.5 website.
